Where is the Surface?

In early 2007, when anxiety grew around the iPhone, Microsoft pulled a rabbit out of its hat, with the announcement of an Interactive Computer in the form of a table, appropriately named as ‘Surface’. Shortly, a website elegantly (but ironically using Silverlight instead of Flash) demo’ed Surface and some of its capabilities.

However, none (atleast in the blogsphere) have seen or heard anything about the project(product?)’s status and GA readiness after that. Initially, the website stated a planned release during October 2006, which is now changed to Spring of 2008. Was this something Microsoft put up to ‘be in the league’ and demonstrate its ‘multi-touch’ capabilities when everyone around was focused on iPhone’s multi-touch feature?
