Let there be ‘Google’

If there is a God, he definitely said ‘Let there be Google’. Google search registered an astonishing 112 Million searches per day back in January 2003. I can’t help thinking what that number would be today!

Google is undoubtedly the most used search engine today, and it did beat Yahoo and MSN. We all know, most of Google’s revenue comes from its ‘Search’ and the relative AdWords/AdSense programs.

Over the past few years, Google has shred its identity as a Search company, and further expanded to areas in the Internet like Maps, Videos, News, and Orkut to name a few. You would find numerous other applications and services under development in their labs.

Some argue that the entire line of products and services offered by Google have not been successful and only a few, found its way to the top of the charts. This is true, but what puzzles me right now is the fact that when someone says ‘Google’ to me, I can neither think of them as a Search company nor can I think of them as an Internet applications company. Look at the announcement on their official blog today, after all debuts they are stepping into Mobile technologies now, attempting to create an ‘open’ platform for Mobile applications development. The partners include Motorola, Qualcomm, HTC and T-Mobile. I am not a mobile technology expert but in my opinion, these players do not dominate the market. There are other big players like Nokia and Sony Ericsson that already work on Symbian. Will they also embrace the ‘Open Handset Alliance’? Time will tell.

I think Google is going through an identity crisis right now, and they better fix this before one of their developers come up with an idea of launching probes to Mars, in their 80/20 research time!
